Working therapeutically with Autistic adults with a PDA profile
Supporting PDA clients
The term Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) was first coined in relation to observations of children and adolescents with an atypical presentation of autism. Although there is limited research in the field, there is a growing body of information on how to understand and support the needs of child and adolescent PDAers. But what about the experience of adults who may fit this profile? Often when learning about their young person’s PDA profile some parents have the realisation that this way of being also resonates for them. However, there is little research and understanding about PDA from an adult perspective.
This presentation will provide an overview of our current knowledge and experience in supporting adult PDAers, discuss any differences between child and adult presentations, understand accessibility barriers that impact on work, family life and wellbeing, and consider the associated strengths and support needs from a neurodiversity affirming perspective.
What you will learn:
- What is PDA and how it presents in adults
- Building a therapeutic relationship to support engagement
- Adapting therapeutic approaches
- Being responsive to fluctuations in capacity throughout client's session
- The crucial nature of co-regulation
- Therapist self-care and reflection strategies
